I do not think there is much chance that it won't decline into the worst-case scenario, frankly...
There's an irreversible dynamic at work which will drive it: nationalism.
To actually begin to fix it, there needs to be unified efforts. Short of "world government," there is no impetus to drive competing national interests to cooperate in the moment for the benefit of future generations, when there's no IMMEDIATE payback/payoff...
I think I'm glad I don't have more than about 15 years more to worry about it; and having no kids, I have no genetic stake in the deal.
